More Info

The top winners of the 2016 Canada Day Challenge proud to be Canadian through art, photography and creative writing, were revealed in an announcement ceremony held in Markham region, Ontario by the Honourable Jane Philpott, Minister of Health, on behalf of the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage.

One National Grand Winner and two Finalists were selected from each of the three categories. In the announcement event on June 10th, Rachel Shen, 14 from Markham, Ontario, was there with families, teachers and classmates to hear the result of herself as the National Winner of the Draw It! Category in the contest. The other two National Winners are Adele Beaudoin, from Red Deer, Alberta, in the “Write it!” category and Florence Emmanuelle Parent, from Rosemère, Quebec, in the “Snap it!” category.

This year, the theme is "What makes you proud to be Canadian?". Rachel Shen who has been learning creative art in Beware Wet Paint Art School since the age of 6, beat the other youth candidates from 8 to 18 years old across Canada to stand as the national top winner in the drawing category. In the painting, she used mixed media including watercolour, acrylic paints, pencil crayons…etc to reflect her passions in how Canada is combined with rich cultures and historical background, beautiful natures, dynamic people and future technologies. Together, it creates an abstract form of a Canadian flag which is surrounded by people of diversities celebrating and hoping for the future of Canada.

Every year, using their creativity and imagination, youth from all across Canada took up the challenge to explore Canada's history, culture, and identity and to discover what makes this country a truly special place.

The three national winners will be invited to the biggest celebration in the country, Canada Day on Parliament Hill, on July 1, 2016. They will also have the opportunity to work with the team from the National Film Board of Canada to produce their own short film about their adventure in the region.

Canadians can admire the three winning entries, as well as those by the finalists, by visiting the Canada Day Challenge website or the Canadian Museum of History from June to September 2016.
